THE BULLFROG (RANA CATESBEIANA) AND ITS CULTURE

Abstract
1. Froglegs are 19.9% protein and are a good source of animal protein at home and a good item for export.
2. The first frogs were imported in 1971 and laid eggs on June 22, 1971. The second group was imported in 1972 and laid eggs on July 9, 12, 15, and 18 of the same year.
3. Almost all of the tadpoles hatched from the eggs laid in 1971 were transformed into frogs, and as of October 10, 1972, their individual measurements were:
Body length (mm) Body weight (gr)
Male 90 72
Female 80 58
4. Some of the tadpoles hatched in 1972 reached a full size of 120mm and some of them developed hindlegs as of October 12, 1972.
5. Artificial fertilization is necessary for research and control.
6. Direct exposure of sunlight to egg-masses may kill the eggs. Submerging the eggs two to three inches under water will prevent damage.
7. Cannibalism is the worst threat to tadpole raising. Sufficient food supply (plants and animals) will prevent cannibalism.
8. Eight tadpoles per square foot of tank or pond is the proper number during the first 60 days after hatching. The area must be widened as the tadpoles grow.
9. Feeding boiled beef liver twice a week will supply the necessary animal protein for tadpoles being raised indoors.
10. Newly transformed frogs measure 45mm (body length) and weigh 10 grams (body weight).
11. It is necessary to prepare a separate pond for the reprodution of feed animals such as freshwater shrimp, small fishes, and loaches.
12. In case red leg disease-infested frogs are found, eliminate the diseased frogs immediately and dry the pond for a few days for sunlight disinfection.
